Lakeside Paradise

Loch Gowna Co. Cavan – Ireland

LOCAL AREA

Lakeside Paradise is approximately 2 kilometres from the village of Gowna where there are numerous restaurants, shops, a hotel, tennis courts, a squash court, a children’s playground, 3 pubs and many more lakes.

Cavan offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland, has 365 lakes, is close to Dublin and other major centers yet our setting is tranquil, picturesque, and private.

The village of Gowna and its hinterland has long been a popular destination for short breaks fishing outings, day trippers, hikers and various legions of water sport enthusiasts. The village boasts a unique combination of rural charm and contemporary sophistication.

Recent improvements in infrastructure make this lake land paradise surprisingly accessible to a host of urban centers including Cavan, Mullingar and Longford.

It is only one and a half hours from Dublin and about two hours from both Galway and Belfast.

The growing popularity of eco tourism is making the lake district a very popular choice for short breaks and relocating from main commuter belts. Development at nearby Farnham Estate stands testimony to this trend. This Luxury Lake Lodge at Portanure is a ‘little bit of heaven’ where an imposing residence and mature gardens occupy a sunny southerly slope in a idyllic setting overlooking the picturesque Lake Derries. Boats are easily launched from the shore and the hire of boats can be arranged privately through contacts in the local area. The remainder of the unspoiled 20 acres is supremely beautiful in all seasons and offers the great outdoors at its most beautiful and accessible.

A favourite walk amongst locals is a relaxing stroll through Derrycassin woods on the shores of Loch Gowna.

There are two tennis courts located next to the squash courts. All these activities are outdoor activities so somewhat dependent on the weather. It is advisable to bring your own racquets and balls if you intend to use these facilities. The village is fairly small – you could walk from one end of the village to the other in under 10 minutes. The children’s playground is on the edge of the village as you head towards Arvagh and Cavan. The playground is on open field, so is accessible at any time of the day or night. The squash court is next to both the tennis courts and the children’s playground. Owing to the size of the village, the courts are usually free so there shouldn’t be any waiting time before being able to play a game of squash in idyllic surroundings.

Because of the close proximity to Dublin and other major cities, virtually every activity is possible.

The region boasts beautiful scenic villages hikes around local lakes and mountains walks in Derrycassin Wood and many other equally beautiful locations, as well as sporting activities, shopping in the towns of Cavan and Longford, visits to wonderful restaurants, and local pubs. Ballooning, swimming, boating, claypigeon shooting, horse riding and go-carting are amongst some of the other activities that can be considered.

In addition there are markets that are held on certain days where people travel far-and-wide both to sell their wares as well as to enjoy a relaxing day viewing arts and crafts and the myriad of other items of sale.

Many stalls offer food and drink and the markets are very popular with the locals as well as with visitors.

The County also boasts many golf courses as well as the activities mentioned on other pages of this website such as Cavan and Longford.
